| Music and Arts Summit Update |
|
Despite torrential downpours, a spirited and motivated group gathered at the Monitor Barn on June 24th for the Music and Arts Summit. The Highland Weavers kicked off the evening with a great live performance featuring Celtic music and song. While the band was playing, community members had the opportunity to view displays and speak with representatives from The Celtic New Year, Huntington Valley Arts, The Valley Stage and The Minor Key Youth Rock Group. When the music subsided, the group gathered to learn more about our existing events. What are the challenges? What are the successes? What will these events look like in 3 years or 5 years? Can these events provide the foundation of a vibrant Music and Arts scene that eventually leads to our region becoming THE Music and Arts Destination of Vermont? At this point, the collective energy in the room took over a brainstorming and discussion session that revealed a number of great ideas which include:· Promote our region as THE Vermont Arts Destination · Develop a central organization or group of volunteers that works together to identify and promote synergies amongst these and other events or activities. · Create a Community arts fund similar to the conservation fund · Offer ticket sales, communication and marketing via one central location on the web. · Develop a volunteer directory with list of needs in a online clearing house. · Sell season passes that provide access to local events throughout the year. · Tap into Americorp / · Start a mapping project that highlights Music and Arts opportunities around the region. · Build additional local support for our local events. · Bridge to the local school systems · Arts Council Grants · Every day art in public spaces around our communities. · Don’t forget the library. Arts and music is a big part of their mission. · Music, movies and more in the parks To keep the momentum moving behind these and hopefully many other ideas, numerous individuals stepped up and committed to participating in a follow up meeting that will be held in the very near future.
