Why I shop LOCALLY
Written by Marie Thomas

Why I shop locally;
As I get older, I appreciate the little things. I like to go into a store and being greeted by my name. I like that the merchants know my child’s name and can ask questions about my life or projects. I like that when I really compare prices, I can get most of what I need right here in town at competitive prices, especially when you figure in the time and gas. I like that when I want something, my local business will order it for me, and it doesn’t take forever to get it. I like all the time I don’t have to go tramping around big box stores and malls looking for something that I can get right here. As you get older, time seems to speed by and I don’t want to spend the few years I have left shopping!
A couple of examples:
My husband was doing some bodywork on the car so we could get it inspected. He was only able to work on it on the weekend and we need to get it inspected on Monday. At 12:55 on a Sunday, he runs out of a critical element. The Home Supply closes at 1:00 pm. Gas is still $4.00+ a gallon. Can I make it down the hill and over the bridge in time or will I have to go to Williston? As I take off, I call Richmond Home Supply. Chris knows my voice since I shop there all the time and have an account. He understands my plight and when I arrive, the item I need is waiting for me outside the door – it is 1:05. I said to myself – This is why I live in a small town and shop locally!
My son collects miniatures – Star Wars, Axis and Allies, Pirates, whatever you can imagine. These are all expensive and seem to be only sold at a shop in downtown Burlington. We only go to Burlington when we absolutely have to, which is about once a month, so I get nagged all the time. I finally said – “Why don’t you go talk to Laura at Stargazer?”. He did, and now she carries what he likes. Other kids know to shop there, too, and it saves all us parents the long miles trekking into Burlington. My son has learned the value of loyalty and of shopping locally.
My son will only shop for shoes at John’s Shoe Shop. Ever since he was six, he has appreciated the individual attention and careful fitting he gets each time he shops there.
I invited some friends to dinner. Like most good guests, they wanted to bring a present. They went to Richmond Beverage and asked Craig what kind of wine I liked. They showed up with one of my favorite wines!
Now that I’ve learned that the merchants have to pay the bank 3 cents for every dollar put on a credit card, when I shop locally, I also try to shop with cash. That way, more of my money stays here in town and doesn’t go to the bank. I know the businesses will gladly accept my credit card, but using cash or check is my way of thanking them for being here and greatly increasing the quality of my life.
Buying locally has made me a wiser shopper, and saves me time and money. I don’t buy as much stuff that I don’t really need, and I know my money will be reinvested in my community. I am not one of the nameless masses at the mall or big box stores. I really feel that I am part of a vibrant community. Feels like home.
Sarah Spencer - Got Clicks? Presentation
In conjunction with Comcast Spotlight, Got Clicks? welcomed the opportunity to show people effective, affordable, and efficient strategies to market their business online. Sarah Spencer and Kathleen Babcock handled questions from the audience, and gave unique strategies to position businesses for success online. The event took place at the historic Richmond Free Library in beautiful downtown Richmond, Vermont.
Says Spencer,
The easy part is building the website, the hard part is getting eyeballs to see your site. There's nothing worse than having your Picasso hang in the Loo instead of the Louvre...
My mission is to create affordable solutions for small business to conduct their enterprise online. I want to teach the average business owner that you don't need to spend a lot to create an effective website that people want to visit.
For more information on marketing strategies, please contact Sarah Spencer at the web address above or call Kathleen Babcock at 802-846-0087.
